What each account can actually do

Three roles. The email decides which one you are. Nothing below is a roadmap: this is what the app enforces today.

Signing up is not enough. Until the address is confirmed, the app stays on check-email. A role only applies after that.

Student

Someone who signed up as Student with a recognised university email. The campus comes from that domain. There is no campus picker.

How you get it
In the app, with a campus email.
How you appear
A student-word handle and a circular avatar. Nobody picks or edits the handle.

Can

  • Read public threads and campus-only threads on their own campus
  • Start a thread (it begins campus-only), then edit or delete their own
  • Reply, including a GIF, vote on replies, and mention other handles
  • React to replies with one of five emoji
  • Vote on threads, replies and polls, and say “me too”
  • Start from a fee, hostel, marking or shoutout template
  • Move status on a thread they wrote: acknowledged, under review, resolved. Forward only, with a note
  • Follow, save, mute a thread, report, block and send feedback
  • See Today at campus, the Wins wall, the weekly Campus Battle and the daily poll, including yesterday’s result
  • Build an avatar, set a department tag, keep a private streak and earn badges
  • Export a thread, campus scorecard or weekly card, invite classmates, use settings and delete the account

Cannot

  • Post to another campus, or read another campus’s campus-only threads
  • Sign up as an institution
  • See anyone’s real name or email on a thread

Public

Someone who signed up as Public with any email. A parent, a journalist, anyone who should watch without impersonating a student. The account has no campus.

In the app, with any email.
How you appear
An open-word handle and a circular avatar.

Can

  • Read threads that already crossed the campus threshold into public
  • Browse campuses and public scorecards
  • Vote on public threads, replies and polls
  • Reply on public threads, including a GIF, and mention handles there
  • React to replies on public threads
  • Follow threads, campuses and categories, save threads, and mute a thread
  • Report, block, send feedback and receive notifications for what they follow
  • Change password, edit bio and avatar, delete the account

Cannot

  • Start a thread. The compose button is hidden
  • Reply on campus-only threads
  • Open a campus portal, campus-only threads, Today at campus, or the daily poll
  • Say “me too” or set thread status
Get the app

Institution

Staff who answer students for a campus. Not created in the app. Someone at the university requests it on this site; a super-admin approves it. A campus may hold several of these accounts.

How you get it
Requested on the website. Approval emails a link to set a password, then they sign in to the app.
How you appear
An open-word handle and a rounded-square avatar, so it does not look like a student voice. Replies carry a gold verified badge and sit at the top of the thread.

Can

  • Read public threads and campus-only threads on their own campus
  • Reply on those threads. Institution comments are pinned first and marked with a gold badge
  • Move status on any thread of that campus: acknowledged, under review, resolved. Forward only, with a note recorded as the institution, not as the author
  • Open that campus’s portal and scorecard
  • Follow, save, report, block, send feedback, use settings and delete the account

Cannot

  • Sign up as institution from the app
  • Start a thread. The compose button is hidden
  • Vote, react, answer polls or say “me too”
  • Read another campus’s campus-only threads, or set status there
  • See who is behind a handle
